SATA TB

Dear Peter,
  The SATA drives have arrived and I have assembled them in the case.  I
have set up a striped raid array (raid0) at david's suggestion, using
mdadm and an ext3 filesystem, so there is 1176 GB available for storage.

I connected to a USB 2.0 port in one of the mulan machines and performed a
speed test, with the following results:

  70 minutes 1 second
  159 GB
  or 2.27 GB/min

This translates to about 7h20m per 1000 GB.


I will copy a larger set of data tonight and then prepare the box for
shipment monday morning, unless there are any other suggetions/requests.

p.s. When I opened the box, I observed a USB hub fanning
out to a SATA-USB card for each drive.  In practice, if we had 4 USB 2.0
ports on the machine we are using, perhaps we could enhance the speed by a
factor of 4?
