FW: Wheels

Dear Peter,

We modeled what was in the sketches on the web, and frankly your
note of a couple of days ago did not clarify the wheel situation. Now
Rick has checked the source documents against the last note and found
that the wall thickness of the rollers looks impractical. Can you tell
us the manufacturer of these wheels? Rick has tried to find them on the
web using key words from the documents with no luck. We really need a
real catalog page with dimensions for these parts, or somebody holding
an actual wheel to do a much more detailed dimensioned sketch. There
also seem to be two different kinds of wheels and we just don't know
enough about either one.
Here is the bottom line. Today is Thursday, 8/1/02. Rick has just
recently, once we got the new information, ramped up his effort to on
the order of 20 hrs/week. I thought I could spend some hours in the
evening this week and have simply been too exhausted from the FNAL job
to be able to do so. Rick and I just developed the main structural
concept for the frame two nights ago, (based on what we thought we knew
about the wheels). There are two layers of alignment mechanisms that
still need to be designed, as well as cable strain reliefs for the wire
chambers. We will not be done this week. I doubt that the 3D model
will be done next week. The following week I go on vacation for two
weeks. I NEED THIS VACATION!!!
We got the information we needed (and still do not have enough) too
late to get the parts at UIUC by mid (or even end of) September. We are
working on this as fast as we are able, but I am very concerned that it
will just not satisfy you. I'm not sure what you want to do, but I will
certainly understand if you want to find additional engineering support,
not that I believe that will get the job done any faster. (As Mr. Scott
said, "I can't change the laws of physics Captain!" or in our case, the
laws of manufacturing.)
Sorry to sound so negative. Your job has been on my mind
constantly as one of the first examples in my career where I really
disappoint a client.
On a more practical note, what is the impact on the experiment of
being roughly a month late? I do think we can get it done within the
envelope of a month late. Talk to you soon.

                         Ciao,
                         Larry

Hi,

Did you get a message off to Peter yet? I just compared the width of
the
wheels in his recent MS Word file from Koferli (78 mm) with the outside
dimension from the sketch, which is 85 mm. This means the side wall of
the
roller box can't be more than 3.5 mm thick - about 1/8". This doesn't
seem
practical to me. We really need a drawing or catalog page for this
thing. If you want I'll send him a message to ask for more details. It

might also be useful to get translations of the text on the various
documents we have gotten from them. Do you if this is German? If so,
we
have some German customers who I can send them to by e-mail.

Later,
Rick
