[Collab] mu to e at FNAL?

Dear MuLaner's,

In the search for the 'next experiment' you might want to look at the
muon to electron conversion experiment which we are trying to promote at FNAL.
I'm sure you've all heard about the unfortunate demise of the previous
proposal to measure mu2e, the MECO experiment at BNL.
In spite of that, mu to e conversion has always gotten the highest
physics marks in all the reviews, and its physics reach is excellent.
It is an experiment which should be done somewhere if possible.
Steve Geer of FNAL has been holding informal meetings with local experts
to examine the feasibility of installing such an experiment at FNAL.
It turns out that in one scenario, it is highly feasible, with no
major changes to existing accelerator equipment required.

We will be having a meeting of potentially interested people at FNAL Sept
15-16, details below. Talks will be given on proposed scenarios,
and the previous MECO experimental approach will be presented. MECO
is only considered a good start, and there is plenty of room for changes
and new design work. None of the jobs are spoken for, and participation
is wide open. The questions to be addressed are:
1) Technical feasibility.
2) The propsects of getting FNAL and funding support.

If you think you might be interested, please try to come to this meeting.

Hope to see you there!

Best,
Jim

Fermilab mu2e Meeting: 15-16 Sept. 2006<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns

Curia II

Over the last few months, a group at Fermilab, together with members
of the ex-MECO Collaboration, have been exploring the possibility of
providing beam for a muon-to-electron conversion experiment at
Fermilab. The meeting 15-16 September is intended to bring together
all those who are interested in learning about, and who might be
interested in participating in, this new (mu2e) experiment. We will
discuss the physics motivation, the beam options and issues at
Fermilab, review the design of the MECO experiment, and try to assess
the level of interest in working towards a proposal for a new
experiment.

MEETING PLACE: Curia II, Fermilab

REGISTRATION: None. No badges, no conference bags, just
presentations, discussion ~E and coffee breaks. Dinner Friday evening
will be a pay-your-self deal. All those who might be interested in
the experiment are welcome.

MEETING GOALS:

i) Review the beam possibilities for a mu2e
experiment at Fermilab, using the existing proton source, and decide
whether an attractive scenario exists.

ii) Review the experiment design, and identify options
and opportunities for collaborators.

iii) If things look promising, make plans for the next
step(s).
