copying

Dear Peter and Fred,
We discussed the data transfer situation at the teleconference
yesterday. The main issues are as follows:
1) The transfer is going much slower than expected because of some ncsa
internal networking problems.
Sometimes we get 10 MB/sec and other times we get <1 MB/sec over
extended periods of time.
I have only copied about 15% of the data at this point.
The network instability frequently causes the passwordless
kerberized ftp transfer to become unauthorized, halting the script.
2) David and Ron think we are planning on shipping the robot to PSI some
time next week

 - We are currently discussing 2 options
1) Alex Parga at NCSA asked why we aren't using NCSAs ultra large
library for our tapes and then wondered out loud if perhaps this is a
taboo. Steve mentions that he recalls NCSA saying they wouldn't host
foreign tapes.
2) We can ask PSI to construct a larger shipping box with low density
foam to pack the UCB LTO2 robot. Hopefully the shipping is successful
after such precautions. Otherwise we would upgrade to LTO3.

Basically, I am just soliciting advice if either of you have any other
ideas/objections. Obviously if NCSA can host our tapes our trouble is
avoided. Alternatively, I don't see a better solution than trying to
ship the LTO2 drive to Illinois. I will update you when I hear back
from NCSA.

Regards,
   Brendan
