Re: Plans for final Run8 unblinding

Dear MuCappers,

here is a list of what I believe still needs to be done before the Run8
analysis is ready for the final clock frequency unblinding:

  Collaboration
  -------------
  1. We need to resolve the mysterious 16 Hz discrepancy between my and
     Steve's Prod-50 fitted decay rates.
  2. We need to reach a consensus on how to perform the high-Z impurity
correction, as we still don't have a consistent understanding of the
     Run8 impurity composition and concentrations/yields/efficiencies.
  3. We need to obtain a mu+ result.

  Berkeley
  --------
  4. We need to perform a zero-extrapolation for muSC+muPC1 deadtime
     effects.
  5. Miscellaneous final consistency checks and studies/details:
     - Settle upon final fiducial TPC mustop criteria
     - Select final run group
     - Investigate the relevance of the high-deuterium-concentration
"gondola effect" to the deuterium extrapolation procedure
     - ...

At the moment, items 1 & 2 are the potential "showstoppers", and it's
difficult to set a timetable for their solution. However, I think that
mid-to-late September is a reasonable date for the unblinding. It's
conceivable that we'll be ready sooner, but given the care with which this
analysis must be done, and the time it takes to tie up loose ends, I think
August would be setting a too-tight schedule--especially if we are to
prepare a "detailed technical analysis report" 2 weeks in advance of the
meeting itself.

I will post this e-mail in the MuCap Run8-Analysis ELOG to give us a
starting point for discussion at the next teleconference.

Regards,
Tom
