RE: Exchange MuLan / MuCap
Peter(s),
Thanks for the very important technical update on the switching
scenarios. I will talk to the local Peter this morning. I assume one
of the most important issues is onsite manpower to navigate the
changeover. If we have the people onsite to do the work, then I suppose
we will proceed as planned. I believe we will have Brendan and Steve
from our side. I would like to know the whole list, including the
commitment from the PSI team.
Certainly MuLan can stop at 8 am Monday if necessary and, with a
bit of thought, we can be removed quickly (typically we can be out of
the area well before lunch break). The barrack can come more slowly
then if they survey and crane folks need to put in the shielding.
As you know, we need to be setup and working done in the staging
area. It will be critical to be able to "run" with LEDs and pulsers in
order to debug firmware and to test daq and other things related to the
data set.
Peter (local) and I will talk this morning and perhaps draw up a
list...he probably has it posted somewhere in cyberspace.
Regards,
Dave

Subject: Exchange MuLan / MuCap
Dear Peter and Dave,
Malte and I just discussed with the Hallendienst and the survey group.
We thought it might be good to give you a short briefing so that you can
already discuss or think about it.
Here are the major facts:
- In the week of Oct./24. there is the SLS shutdown in parallel and that
normally requires a lot of work for the survey group. In this week they
are only two persons instead of three. According to their experience, on
the first day of the shutdown there is normally less to do (so they
could work with us). They are busy most often on day 2 and 3 (i.e.
Tuesday/Wednesday)
- The survey group will need to measure some things (~half a day) at the
time or after the shielding is installed and before the detector goes
in. With respect to the SLS shutdown this could be done most probable
on Monday 24. but not on Wednesday 26.
- The installation of the shield + tracks + survey should be possible in
one day if MuLan is out of the area fast (i.e. we are done with
everything at 8 in the morning)
- The survey group will somehow manage to do the measurements after the
detector went in the week of 24. although they are less in manpower.
- In the week of 10./31. the survey group has three persons available
but due to the bank holiday on 11./1. we cannot plan to start exchange
before 11./2.
- I'll be gone on 10/18 til 11/1 and Malte will be busy with his work.
Besides maybe Claude (does he have time to be around the whole time?) it
will be difficult to discuss with the local staff.
Therefore I see the following situations:
- Scenario 1: We start on Monday 10./24. Unfortunately the survey group
will get their final information concerning the SLS next Wednesday but
they said they'll somehow manage. Who will organise the communication
with the Hallendienst? Do we have enough people to guarantee that all
the preparations from our side will be done?
- Scenario 2: We start on 11/2 with the exchange. Then we have more
people for discussion with the local staff. But do we have enough people
MuLan in order to run longer and to do the preparatiosn for the
exchange?
To my mind the option to start the exchange on Wednesday 26. is ruled
out because of the tight schedule of the survey group.
That's all for now, the rest we should discuss on phone.
Greetings
Peter
