Hi, Peter and Steve,

By "wiretapping" the serial port with a monitor program and watching
how the Windows software interacts with the Agilent DMM, Brendan and I 
discovered what I had been doing wrong in my previous tests.  It was a rookie
mistake: it insists on a linefeed rather than a carriage return at the end of 
the command.  I think the DMM is probably in fine shape.
