Hi, Peter,
No, the problem is with the drive, not with you. I ran the HP
StorageWorks diagnostics and got the following output:
- Test 'Test Script' started on device 'HP Ultrium 2-SCSI' at address
'0.1.0[0-/dev/sg0]'
- Failed
- Operations Log
- Executing Rules Based Analysis (rules file is /tmp/LTT_TPa8loN.tst)
- executing LTO acceptance test...
- Getting drive information...
- Getting Mech EEPROM data...
- Getting other drive information...
- Getting other drive information...
- retrieving nonvolatile fault log data...
- filtering log data...
- checking fault log rules...
- writing device analysis history log...
- loading tape...
- SCSI parity check...
- writing ...
- Test failed
- Analysis Results
- LTO Drive Assessment Test, version V30.08.2004
- LTO Drive Assessment Test, module version V01.09.2004
- Script is unable to verify if this device is using latest firmware -
revision data was not loaded from web.
- Rule 3
- There are indications of problems reading the tape servo data.
- However, the drive has not been cleaned since the last occurrence.
- Please clean the drive with an unexpired cleaning cartridge.
- Rule 3
- There was a problem reading the tape servo code.
- The media could be showing signs of wear.
- It is advisable to discard this tape (Serial Number: 1140200015).
- Please use an unexpired cleaning tape, then try using a new cartridge.
- hp recommends the use of hp storage media.
- Please run the LTO Drive Assessment Test to check the operation of your
drive.
- Device Analysis has checked the historical information and some problems
were found.
- There has been an error while writing to tape.
- Please re-run the test with a different known good tape.
- Write command failed at block 1041
- Byte2 0x3 SenseCode 0xc SenseQual 0x0
As advised, I ran the cleaning tape, then loaded your other test tape and ran
the diagnostics again:
- Test 'Test Script' started on device 'HP Ultrium 2-SCSI' at address
'0.1.0[0-/dev/sg0]'
- Failed
- Operations Log
- Executing Rules Based Analysis (rules file is /tmp/LTT_TsUgVS3.tst)

I'll open a trouble ticket with Open Storage -- it's probably time for
another drive swap.
Sorry for the confusion,
