“Ultrahigh Purification and Isotopic Separation of Hydrogen”

Abstract:
The purification of hydrogen to a few ppb level for non-hydrogeneous elements and the isotopic separation to
better than 0.1 ppm deuterium have been of paramount importance for the success of the MuCAP experiment at PSI,
which requires ultra-pure hydrogen as a target. We have built two systems to perform the purification process.
The continuous hydrogen purification system (CHUPS) allows us to continuously clean a hydrogen flow from
outgassing impurities down to the few ppb level. Additionally, we use an isotope separation column to obtain
isotopically pure hydrogen 1H or deuterium 2H. We will explain the technical principles of the purification
apparatuses and present the results. |
